Nothing inspires like a great demo and the primary goal of the platform products team is to inspire developers to create great applications using Freebase data. That starts with coming up with interesting ideas and moves on to building killer demo applications and often results in using that experience to develop components and libraries for others to use in their applications.
We're a small team and just getting started, but so far our team has done fun little things like a bookmarklet for injecting Freebase data into blogs and wikis, a converter library for using Freebase data to create timelines and map overlays using simile, to bigger projects like a javascript library for using Freebase as a data dictionary to validate any form input and building full-blown apps like an IMDb clone entirely in javascript or a Flash app for visually spinning through who funded or founded which start-up.
So if you love data, mash-ups, and hacking, this may be the internship for you. The most important qualifications are creativity, being able to take an idea and run with it, and a willingness to ask questions and chase down answers. Javascript experience is pretty much a must and there are advantages to using Python for server-side stuff, but there is freedom to use just about any language you want as long as the results are cool.
